What is consumerization?

The term makes its appearance in 2005, when Gartner (the largest and most influential group of industry analysts) defined consumerization as:

“The most important trend regarding information technology over the next 10 years”

Evolution of consumerization

Consumerization has its roots in the late 80s and early 90s, in the decade of the birth of Personal Computers and the first user friendly operating systems. A wave of changes ridden by two great entrepreneurs: The strategist Bill Gates and the visionary Steve Jobs .

A second turning point came after the affirmation of the mobile phone (1990-2003) and of the internet (1995-2004), which together with the crisis generated by the bursting of the dot-com bubble generated unprecedented choices by the producers of technology.

The latter, in fact, were driven by these events to focus their attention on large sales volumes constituted by the mass market , at a time when the spending power of the companies was critically reduced and in which the internet allowed new great opportunities.

A change of direction of extraordinary importance, therefore, which has always led Gartner to affirm:

“The mass market will guide the industry that is at the base of research and development, more than the military market or for companies. This will also significantly reduce the life cycle of the technologies “.

Never prediction was so apt.

The revolution of the modern workstile of the 21st century

Beyond the technological and strategic aspects, consumerisation is literally revolutionizing the way people work .

Today, workers use the laptop, smartphone or tablet and carry out different activities by choosing the device to be used without distinction, choosing whether to do it in the office, on the road or in another location.

Just a simple internet connection and business software applications can be immediately made available from anywhere.

The “modern workstyle”, as it is defined, finds its maximum expression in two magical ingredients, clearly the fruit of the consumerization of IT: BYOD and Cloud Computing .


The BYOD or Bring Your Own Device is an expression to refer to corporate policies that allow employees to bring their own personal devices to work and use it to access data and applications software business.

You can’t talk about BYOD without talking about Cloud! The Cloud Computing is a new method of software delivery. In practice, just connect to the internet from any device (laptop, tablet, smartphone) to be able to access a specific software … even business!

The advantages and disadvantages of the consumerization of IT for companies

The fact that consumerisation is radically changing the way people work is often considered by companies in a contrasting way. If in fact the advantages connected to it are very many it is also true that there are very complex problems.

The advantages are clearly linked to the increased productivity and mobility of workers , while the main problems are related to the security aspect .

In fact, to allow these methods of work to be used, new skills and new investments are needed in the IT area and in times of crisis it is always difficult to budget this type of investment, even if it is highly profitable!


Workers and professionals on the move who need to be always connected and in contact with company resources – from home, on the road or from other locations – are in strong and continuous growth.

The companies following the advance of the consumerization of IT and the modern workstile, increasingly oriented to Mobile Working , are called to new important challenges.

The phenomenon is unstoppable, companies are warned!
